When Does the Fly Fishing Season Start and End in Argentine Patagonia?

Argentine Patagonia is one of the great fly fishing destinations in the world. But before planning a fishing trip, it is important to understand one key point: fly fishing in Argentine Patagonia is regulated, and the season is not exactly the same in every province, river, lake or protected area.

In general, the main trout fishing season in northern Patagonia begins in November and usually runs until April or May, depending on the location and current regulations. Some selected waters may have longer seasons or even allow fishing year-round, but these cases must always be checked before the outing.

The main fishing season

For most anglers visiting northern Patagonia, the main fishing season begins in November. This is when spring is active, rivers and lakes begin to warm, insects become more present and trout start feeding more consistently.

The season usually extends through April or May, but the exact closing date depends on each province, environment and regulation. Some waters close earlier, others remain open longer, and a few may have special rules.

Why fishing dates can change

Patagonia should not be treated as one single fishing area with one fixed rule. Each province, national park, river, lake or special environment may have its own opening dates, closing dates, permitted techniques and conservation requirements.

November to April

November usually marks the start of the main trout season. December to February bring long summer days and strong dry fly opportunities. March and April are favorite months for many experienced anglers because trout often feed actively before winter.

May and selected extended waters

After April or May, options become more limited. Some selected lakes, rivers or specific environments may have longer seasons or special rules that allow fishing outside the main period, but colder weather, access limitations and local regulations need to be considered.

Do you need a fishing permit?

Yes. To fish in Argentine Patagonia, anglers need a valid fishing permit. The permit is personal and should be carried during the fishing day.

The permit is not included in Na Patagonia Fly Fishing outings. It is paid separately by each client. However, we help guests understand which permit applies to their outing and where to purchase it before the fishing day.

National parks and special areas

If you plan to fish inside a national park, in Tierra del Fuego, or outside the main November–May season, it is especially important to check the current regulations in advance.
